Behavior Management
Establishing a great management system from the start is the key to a successful school year! I believe that positive reinforcement is the key to giving students confidence to want to succeed and take pride in their everyday lives. In my classroom I really believe it is centered around positive reinforcement. Below are the different programs we implement in our classroom to ensure that students have a successful school year!
Caught Being Good Tickets
This is a school wide management system that awards students anywhere in the building for doing a great job. Any teacher can reward a student with a “caught being good ticket. These tickets will be placed in a basket in our classroom and we will do random drawings weekly in the classroom for prizes! Tickets will also be placed in an all school drawing each week and the winners are announced by Mr. Boyes during Friday’s announcements. If a student is chosen they receive a token and are able to choose which prize they want to receive!
Healthy Choice Jar
The Healthy Choice Jar is a fun way to promote healthy lifestyles within our classroom. This system the students work together as a class to earn a healthy choice to place in the jar. They earn the healthy choices by as a class getting a compliment in the hallway or all working quietly at their desks and so on. Once the jar is filled the class will plan a Healthy Party. This maybe be a fun game of kick ball or playing an exercise video that they all seem to enjoy doing and then usually a fun healthy snack that they can make together. We have created a healthy trail mix together before or we have made healthy fruit dips, all in which the students loved and enjoyed making!
Clipboard System
If a student is not being respectful, responsible or safe they will have to sign their name on the clipboard and write the reason why. So for example if a student doesn't bring their homework back they will sign their name on the clipboard and next to their name they would write “Incomplete math assignment.” The 1st time a student signs the clipboard it is a warning and they need to sit out of recess for 5-10 minutes. The second time they sign the clipboard they will need to go to our DWP Buddy Room and fill out a debriefing sheet that goes over what the problem they are having and how to fix it. This sheet will be sent home for you to see and sign as well. Unfortunately I will ask them to owe the majority of their recess as well. If a student has to sign their name on the clipboard three times in one day a detention will be assigned. If a student has to sign their name to the clipboard five times in one week a detention will be assigned. The clipboard will be taken with us anywhere we go: specials, Mrs. Melvin’s classroom, recess, lunch, etc. All staff members know this program and are applying it to ensure our students at Bennington Elementary are achieving to the best of their abilities.
